Basic Oval Basket and Picnic Basket

Finished Dimensions:

Approx. 3” tall x 3 1/2”wide

Worsted Weight Yarn Colors:

Your choice (I would suggest using cotton yarn for a stiffer basket)

Other Supplies:

F/5 (3.75 MM) crochet hook

Yarn or tapestry needle

Scissors

Stitchmarkers

Basket

Rnd 1: Sc 6 in magic ring OR Ch 2, Sc 6 in 2nd ch from hook

Rnd 2: Inc 6 (12 sts)

Rnd 3: (Inc 3, Sc 3) rep 2 times (18 sts)

Rnd 4: (Inc 6, Sc 3) rep 2 times (30 sts)

Rnd 5: (Sc 3, Inc 6, Sc 6) rep 2 times (42 sts)

Rnd 6: (Sc 3, (Dec, Sc 2) rep 3 times, Sc 6) rep 2 times (36 sts)

Rnds 7-8: Sc 36

Stop here if your are making the Basic Oval Basket. Continue for Picnic Basket.

Rnds 9-11: Sc 36

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Lid Sections

These are worked as a half circle. The first step is done as a round; all others are rows. Stitch counts do not include the turning chain. Make 2.

Rnd 1: Sc 3 in magic ring OR Ch 2, Sc 3 in 2nd ch from hook. Ch and turn.

Row 2: Inc 3, Ch and turn (6 sts)

Row 3: Inc 6, Ch and turn (12 sts)

Row 4: Sc 3, (Inc, Sc) rep 3 times, Sc 3 (15 sts)

Row 5: Sc 3, (Inc, Sc 2) rep 3 times , Sc 3 (18 sts)

Finish by chaining 2 for the corner and working sc sts across the flat bottom to make it even.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Handle

Row 1: Ch 21

Row 2: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, Sc 20.

Fasten off; weave in ends.

For the Basic Oval Basket, sew the ends of the handle to either side of the basket.

For the Picnic Basket, sew the flat edges of the two lid pieces together so they form a circle/oval that is hinged in the middle.  Sew either side of the hinge to either side of the basket so that it can open and close.  Then sew the ends of the handle to either side of the basket.

This is an easy pattern to add variation to.  Try decorating with crocheted flowers or cute buttons or add an edging or some ribbon.  I’d love to see your pictures!
