Ready for the Next Installment

Continuing with last week’s nautical theme, here’s another sea creature.  This one will take a little more yarn (though still not a whole skein) and the body shape varies more than any of the other designs so far, but since all the tentacles are crocheted as one piece, there will be fewer ends to weave in when you’re done.

Octopus Egg Cozy

Cotton Yarn (any color you like, I used purple)
                Crochet hook (Size F-3.75MM)
Plastic Easter Egg, normal size (I buy the ones from Walmart)
Gauge: 4.5 sts per inch. Adjust as needed to get your cozy to fit your egg.
Special Stitches:
Half Double Crochet Decrease (Hdc Dec) [YO. Insert hook in the stitch or space indicated.  Pull up a loop] rep 2 times.  YO.  Pull through all five loop on your hook.
Rnd 1: Sc 5 in magic ring OR Sc 2, Sc 5 in the 2nd chain from the hook

Rnd 7: [Inc, Sc 4] rep 4 times (24 sts)
Rnd 8: Sc 24 (24 sts)
Rnd 9: [Inc, Sc 3] rep 6 times around (30 sts)
Rnd 10: [Inc, Sc 4] rep 6 times around (36 sts)
Rnd 11: [Dec, Sc] rep 12 times around (24 sts)
Rnd 12: [Dec, Sc 4] rep 4 times (20 sts)
Rnd 13: [Hdc Dec, Hdc 8] rep 2 times (18 sts)
Rnd 14: [Sc, Ch 21. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook and working back down the chain, {3 Sc in one st, 2 Sc in the next} rep 10 times. Sc in the next Rnd 13-st.] rep 8 times around. Sc 2.
Check to make sure your egg fits inside the cozy, then finish off and weave in ends.

Make 2.
Rnd 1: Sc 6 in magic ring OR Sc 2, Sc 6 in the 2nd chain from the hook
Rnd 2: Inc 6         (12 sts)
Finish off, weave in ends.  Use black yarn to make a pupil in the center of each eyespot.  Sew both eyes to the front of your octopus, just above the tentacles. Questions or comments?  Feel free to contact me on my blog or at

My next installment won’t be oceanic, so if you’re Easter basket needs more aquatic friends, try designing a few of your own.  And feel free to send pictures of your finished designs.  Have fun!
